1) What inspired you to start your business?
Well, the person that got me into what I am doing today was ‘Joe Wicks, The Body Coach’. I started following him on Instagram and loved what he was doing, so I made an Instagram page myself and started to upload images/videos of my cooking. After a short while I had interest from friends that I should start preparing and selling healthy meals as a startup business idea.
I got my first order of 10 meals around March 2016, which took me about 4 hours to make!! After a couple of weeks I started to receive a few more orders, and then a few more. By October 2016 I was preparing around 70 meals a week in my spare time whilst working a full time job at the NHS.
Once the new year of 2017 came I then started to get even busier, preparing 150 meals of a weekend (that was my limit). I condensed my hours at the NHS over 4 days so I could have more time to do the meals. At the end of January I dislocated my shoulder playing football and was signed off work for 6 weeks, which meant I also couldn’t cook. Thanks to my amazing family who helped cook the food whilst I couldn’t.
The longer I was off work the more I didn’t want to go back to something that I didn’t enjoy, so I started the process of applying for loans with yourself. In March 2017 I handed in my 4 week notice with the NHS to pursue a career in the health and fitness industry.
In April 2017 I signed a three year lease contract for the property we are based at today.
2) What issues have you overcome since starting up your business?
So many issues, but it would be too easy if there wert any. Id say the main issue though would have to be money. When people say your first year in business is the hardest, it really is!! Trying to get your name out there, making a brand, paying wages, bills etc really is expensive. I can now happily say though that the business is in a great position and are looking on expanding this year!
3) What successes have you had recently?
We have had so many good things happen since opening. We are proud sponsors for professional athletes who are at the top of their game in the boxing and MMA world. Have great relationships with local gyms who use our service. Recently joined JustEat which has exploded massively. Also the launch of our website. So many…
4) What are your plans for the next 5 years?
One of the plans for this year is to possibly open a second location still within the Liverpool area. The next 5 years, who knows? Maybe one in every part of the country or world, that’s definitely the end goal.
5) What did Startup Direct teach you about starting up a business and the different types of funding for startups?
The mentors at Startup Direct, delivery partner of Start Up Loans Scheme, taught me that if you have an idea and a good plan, funding is available to make your dream a reality.
